Most of our themes use Font Awesome 4.7 for their icons. WoonderShop uses Font Awesome 5. There are two common reasons why the icons stop working.
A newer version of Font Awesome was added to your site
If you add a newer version of Font Awesome (version 5 or later) to a theme that uses version 4.7, with a plugin or with custom code, some of the icons stop working. Even when the icon names look the same, the newer versions need different classes. For example, brand and social icons need the fab class, and the newer version replaces the font of the general fa class.
To keep the icons working, don’t add another version of Font Awesome to your site. Use the icons that come with your theme instead:
- Font Awesome 4.7 (all our themes except WoonderShop): Font Awesome 4 icons
- Font Awesome 5 (WoonderShop): Font Awesome 5 icons
Why don’t we update our themes to a newer Font Awesome?
Most of our themes were released before Font Awesome 5. The icon names in the newer versions are not all the same, and some icons were renamed or removed. If we updated Font Awesome in these themes, the icons on our customers’ sites could break when they update the theme. That’s why we kept Font Awesome 4.7 in those themes and use Font Awesome 5 in WoonderShop.
Icons disappeared after you edited style.css
If you edit the theme’s style.css file directly, the icon characters in the file can get lost when you save it, probably because of the editor’s encoding settings. To fix this:
- Move your custom CSS to Appearance › Customize › Additional CSS (see where to add custom CSS) or to a child theme.
- Replace the edited
style.csswith the original file from the theme zip. You can download the theme again from your ProteusThemes account, or from your ThemeForest downloads if you bought it there.
