My name is Matt Knight. I’m the newest member of the ProteusThemes team and to be honest, I have no idea how to use WordPress. I joined ProteusThemes just over a week ago to help with customer research and development. I know enough about customer research to handle that side of things. But product and industry knowledge, that’s a very different story.

For full disclosure, my experience in digital marketing only goes back about a year. So, in fairness, I am rather a newcomer in that field too. The question here is quite self evident then. How does a relatively inexperienced digital marketer with even less experience in WordPress help to develop customers for a WordPress theme publisher?

There is really only one way to handle the task. In order to provide valuable content to our readers and customers, I have to get to know what I’m talking about. And for me to know well enough what I’m talking about, I’m going to have to embark on a WordPress knowledge quest… From scratch.

It’s hard to swallow that I’m about to quote Donald Rumsfeld (of all people), but I do like his analysis of the things we know and don’t know:

‘There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know’.

Don sums up exactly how I feel about WordPress. I know I don’t know how to use it, that’s fine with me. But it’s the elements within WordPress that I don’t even know that I don’t know about which are the most daunting.

My colleagues have kindly designed a WordPress crash course for me. So, over the coming weeks and months I’m going to be building a project website to learn about the things I know I don’t know about, and to discover the things I had no idea existed.

About the Author
I'm relatively new to the WordPress ecosystem, but I have always been an avid writer. It feels amazing to do something I love and learn so much at the same time. Outside of work I'm usually reading novels, watching documentaries or feeling disappointed with Newcastle United.
